listing sql server and instances
I'm trying to detect all the servers and instance in the SQL Management
Studio 2005. We have 2 separate networks. On one network, it seems to work well.. I can see all the servers and instances. On the other network, I'm only able to see one server (WSUS) and his instances. I should be able to view at least 5 others servers and their instance. Is there a permission to set somewhere that I missed ? Hello Jean,
Frist check the permission, check TCP/IP port which port it's using and if eveything is correct manually type the server and instance and try to connect it. Cheers!!! In my experience, browsing for servers has never been reliable due to
how it is implemented and various technicalities. I suggest Jean just live with it and type the server names. Browsing for server will probably never be reliable until we register each server somewhere (like AD) and query that repository. -- Show quoteHide quoteTibor Karaszi, SQL Server MVP http://www.karaszi.com/sqlserver/default.asp http://sqlblog.com/blogs/tibor_karaszi "FM" <F*@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:41F08E96-6503-4A42-A55E-DFE71223A6DA@microsoft.com... > Hello Jean, > > Frist check the permission, check TCP/IP port which port it's using > and if > eveything is correct manually type the server and instance and try > to connect > it. > > Cheers!!! > > "Jean Gaudreau" wrote: > >> I'm trying to detect all the servers and instance in the SQL >> Management >> Studio 2005. >> >> We have 2 separate networks. >> >> On one network, it seems to work well.. Can it be related to machine permission? if yes, is there a place that I can
look to see what machines are granted. How come some workstation will be able to view and some won't. It's always the same machines that will and won't work. I really don't know where to look at. Some strange behavior also is that another workstation will be able to list all servers and instances while the workstation beside will see the server list without the instances. I tried Management Studio 2005 & 2008 to check if there would be a difference, but it does not make any difference.
