SQL Server named instance problem with Windows Server 2003

Hi,

I have installed SQL Server 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine with an
instance name of "TestDB".
But I cannot connect to this instance from another machines. It doen't even
show up in the Enterprise Manager's
"Register SQL Server" window.

But if I use the default instance, it works. Windows 2000 servers do not
have this problem either.

Thanks in advance,
Soheil

Hi
Pls take a look at sp_addlinkedserver stored procedure in the BOL. You are
going to create a linked server to the instance

I do not want to link servers, I just want to connect to this server from a
windows application.

in the window's list

How do you connect to the instance ? With Windows Authentication or Mixed
one?

Did you get the same error when you connect via Windows Authentication?

I think the nub of this when you say you can connect to a Windows 2000
box but not the 2003 box. Check your MDAC versions out as differing
ones between the client and the server can cause issues with named
instances.

Also, one other think to check is the port allocated to the named
instance - it might be different from the default. I f this is the case
connect like so

Servername\instancename:port_number

Cheers

Steve,

MDAC versions completely match and ports are ok too.

Hi

Do you really install the instance as it described in "How to install a
named instance of SQL Server 2000 (Setup)"?

If you do , I  have no idea what is going on , sorry.

I did just some testing  on my machine and it worked fine.

We too have the exact same issue

Our Windows 2003 server enterprise edition client machine can not connect to
a namesd instance of SQL Server 2000 inatalled on a remote machine.

But we can connect to it using Windows 2000 machines

We have installed all latest windows updates and SQL Server 2000 SP4 on the
client machine

Idea 1: Presuming you are using TCP/IP, using the Server Network Utility
determine the port number. Can you connect using the port number like
<computer_name>,<port_number> such as ACCTG,1500
Idea 2: Do you have a SQL Server Browser Service and is it running?

We are using Named pipes alone both at the server and the client

Hi Rick
Thanks for your tip, it worked with MS Sql Server 2000 Query Analyzer
Is there any way we can create an alias so that clients can still refer
to the named instance as <servername>\<Instance Name>

Yes, you can use the Alias tab of the SQL Server Client Network Utility.
But you shouldn't have to. Two ideas:
In the SQL Server Network Utility, on the General tab, in the Enabled
Protocols box, select a protocol and then click Properties. Is the Hide
server box selected?
Or, did you ever install an edition of SQL Server 2005 on this computer? If
you right-click My Computer and then click Manage, and then expand Services
and Applications and then click Services, do you see the SQL Server Browser
Service? If so, that will resolve the instance name to the port or pipe.

can you please chek, using the Server Network Utility (svrnetcn.exe), the
desired network protocols are enabled?

Please don't cross-post like this.  I see about 9 groups that are on the
list that have *nothing* to do with SQL or this problem.  (such as IPsec)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265808/en-us

In addition, if Windows firewall is enabled on Windows Server 2003 SP1, you
may need to create an exception for the port used by your SQL Server
instance.  The fact you didn't experience this issue ond Windows 2000 makes
it seem highly likely this is part of your problem.  Determine the port
number your instance is using by following instructions in the above and
manually create an exception for it.
