SQL Server named instance problem with Windows Server 2003Hi,
I have installed SQL Server 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine with an instance name of "TestDB". But I cannot connect to this instance from another machines. It doen't even show up in the Enterprise Manager's "Register SQL Server" window. But if I use the default instance, it works. Windows 2000 servers do not have this problem either. Thanks in advance, Soheil Hi
Pls take a look at sp_addlinkedserver stored procedure in the BOL. You are going to create a linked server to the instance Show quote "Soheil" <soh***@soheil.com> wrote in message news:%23nxfuIOIGHA.1032@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > Hi, > > I have installed SQL Server 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine with an > instance name of "TestDB". > But I cannot connect to this instance from another machines. box but not the 2003 box. Check your MDAC versions out as differing ones between the client and the server can cause issues with named instances. Also, one other think to check is the port allocated to the named instance - it might be different from the default. MDAC versions completely match and ports are ok too. But you shouldn't have to. Two ideas: In the SQL Server Network Utility, on the General tab, in the Enabled Protocols box, select a protocol and then click Properties. Is the Hide server box selected? Or, did you ever install an edition of SQL Server 2005 on this computer? If you right-click My Computer and then click Manage, and then expand Services and Applications and then click Services, do you see the SQL Server Browser Service? If so, that will resolve the instance name to the port or pipe. -- Show quoteRick Byham MCDBA, MCSE, MCSA Documentation Manager, Microsoft, SQL Server Books Online This posting is provided "as is" with no warranties, and confers no rights. In addition, if Windows firewall is enabled on Windows Server 2003 SP1, you may need to create an exception for the port used by your SQL Server instance. The fact you didn't experience this issue ond Windows 2000 makes it seem highly likely this is part of your problem. Determine the port number your instance is using by following instructions in the above and manually create an exception for it. -- Chris Priede |
